This collection consists of one 15 cm. bound passport, issued by the United States, Dept. of State, to John H. B. Latrobe on May 21st, 1847. It is signed by James Buchanan, then Secretary of State. The document is one sheet folded into eighteen segments; included are signatures and stamps from Latrobe's travels in Prussia, France, Holland, Italy, and Switzerland.

John H. B. Latrobe was an author, lawyer, artist and inventor. He was born in Philadelphia on May 4, 1803, and was educated in Washington and Baltimore. He attended West Point, moved to New Jersey and was involved with the expansion of the railroads, specifically the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad.
